Wanitha is an expert in different domains of fitness and had started off one of the first of its kind aqua aerobics training in Bangalore. Hi Wanitha, to begin with, how did aqua-aerobics take off in Bangalore? And what is your personal experience in getting Bangaloreans to workout in water?

Aqua was launched in early 2009 and Bangaloreans took to it like fish would take to water. They not only lapped up this novel workout routine they also sustained to this form of workout as they saw the tremendous health and fitness benefits it offered.

Which of the centers across the city have aqua-aerobics sessions? 

Classes are held in various centers like hotel ,clubs and health centers and where there are existing pools. Currently we take classes in

  • Zela health club
  • We fit
  • Paul
  • Galaxy

And apartments and personal training.

How many calories can you burn with one hour of aqua aerobics?

A session of aqua aerobics exercises can burn anywhere from 400-700 calories.

Best time to workout in the water?

There is no ideal time to exercise, anytime is fine.

What are the benefits of aqua aerobics?

Aqua aerobics is therapeutic, anti depressant, lessens stress on your joints, improves flexibility, and strengthens and tones all your major muscles. Your body metabolism gets boosted without any weight bearing. The water provides resistance from all directions and hence you burn out more calories. Additionally it is very flexible and so you can change the speed and size of your movements. In a capsule, you can improve your body flexibility, stamina and strength without any serious damage to any of your body parts.

Can you mention some specific medical-related benefits of practicing aqua aerobics?

Of course. Diseases like arthritis, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, geriatrics, post-surgery rehabilitation, cold shoulders, pre and post natal benefits for women, cardiac patients and multiple sclerosis to name a few.

Lastly, if I want to join an aqua aerobics class, what all should I carry with me?

Sure. You must definitely have a swimming costume, water bottle and a towel. You should carry a sunscreen with SPF of 25 (at least) if you want to avoid tanning. You can also bring a swimming cap if you don’t want to wet your hair.
